Surefire Dicamba M Herbicide is for selective broadleaf weed control in turf and lawns. As Crowsfoot grass is not a broadleaf species, Dicamba M will not target or control it. We recommend the selective post-emergent control of crowsfoot on couchgrass with Metric Herbicide, Tribute Herbicide, or Crowbar Herbicide.

Mossman River grass (Cenchrus echinatus) is not on the label as a species controlled by Surefire Dicamba M. There are not a lot of herbicides for control of Mossman River Grass in a domestic lawn, and none we could recommend for selective control in the couch as grass in the grass is difficult to control. Please review the Queensland Government Fact Sheet (https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/invasive-plant-weed/resource/52ed2d50-74c7-4400-a562-bdbb13ac0892) & NSW DPI Weed Wise note (https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/MossmanRivergrass) regarding this species & ensure you read the SDS and Label before purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product pages on our website.

In agricultural situations, products such as Grazon Extra and Starane Herbicides target Common Sensitive Weed. These chemicals should never be used in a domestic turf situation, as severe damage or death could occur.

Surefire Dicamba M Herbicide is not registered to control Singapore daisies.  Metsulfuron-methyl 600 g/L is the only herbicide that is currently registered under the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (under permit PER11463) to control Singapore daisy (Sphagneticola trilobata) as a foliar application.  A rate of 10 g per 100 L water plus a wetting agent is recommended.  We recommend Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl 600 WG Herbicide, Conquest Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide, Ozcrop Metsulfuron Methyl 600 WG Herbicide, or Militia Metsulfuron Methyl 600 WG Herbicide, and a good penetrant; either PCT Reactor Penetrant, Consume Penetrant, or Eurochem Penetrant be included for best results.

  17. Q Is it safe to use Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide around people?
Asked by Arno Van Heerden on May 6, 2023 7:21 am
    Answered by the admin

When used according to the instructions and recommended dosage, Dicamba and MCPA herbicides (including Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide) are generally considered safe to use around humans. However, taking precautions when handling and applying any herbicide is essential. Here are some general safety guidelines for using herbicides: (1) Read and follow the product label instructions carefully. The label will provide specific information regarding safety precautions, protective equipment, application rates, and recommended methods. (2) Wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment as the product label indicates. This may include gloves, goggles, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. (3) Avoid spraying on windy days to prevent the drift of the herbicide onto unintended areas or individuals. (4) Keep children and pets away from the treated area until the herbicide has dried or as the product label directs. (5) Store herbicides securely, out of reach of children and pets. (5) If accidental exposure or ingestion occurs, follow the instructions on the product label for appropriate first aid measures and seek medical attention if necessary. It's important to note that while these herbicides are generally considered safe when used correctly, individuals may have different sensitivities or allergies.

To the best of our knowledge, no selective herbicides are registered as safe to use in Kikuyu and Ryegrass turf lawns to remove established paspalum. These plants must be removed manually or by spot spray application with a knockdown herbicide, like Glyphosate. A pre-emergent herbicide such as Oxafert Herbicide And Fertiliser or Onset 10GR Herbicide could then be considered to control future germinations of paspalum in the established turf.

Thanks for asking this question on the Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide page, but this product only targets broadleaf weeds and will not control Paspalum in Buffalo turf. We suggest DSMA Selective Herbicide to control Paspalum (Paspalum Dilatatum), Summer grass (Digitaria spp.), Mullumbimby Couch and other sedges in buffalo, common couch, bent and fescue lawns, bowling greens and golf courses. DSMA Selective Herbicide application is recommended via Boom Application, so the finest spray is applied evenly over the area. Some users use the DSMA as a spot spray as an 'off-label' recommendation. We have heard that a mixing rate of 30mL per 1 litre of water is being used for this purpose. Care needs to be taken as the over-application of the product will result in phytotoxicity damage. Please read the 'directions for use' carefully before application. These can be found on the products screen under the 'SDS & Technical' tab.

The half-life of Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide in the soil can vary depending on soil type, temperature, and moisture factors. Generally, the half-life of dicamba in the soil is around 1-14 days. However, in some cases, it can persist for several months. Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide is not registered or recommended for use in domestic situations other than turf and lawn areas.

To our knowledge, no selective herbicides are registered to control Creeping Indigo (Indigofera Spicata) effectively. Many herbicides (such as Kamba M (Dicamba + MCPA), 2,4-D Amine and MCPA) can kill Creeping Indigo temporarily. Unfortunately, due to the deep taproot of Creeping Indigo, a slow-kill herbicide is required. Creeping Indigo will shut down when treated too quickly, protecting its roots from the herbicide.

The Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide will not affect Kikuyu in Buffalo turf as it is only effective on broadleaf species of weeds. You may like to look at DSMA Selective Herbicide. The DSMA is registered for use in Buffalo Turf and advises that using on Kikuyu may result in severe injury. This effectively suppresses the Kikuyu, and repeat applications over time will help remove the Kikuyu from the Buffalo. It will be tempting to overdose the Kikuyu to ensure it gets the maximum dose of DSMA chemical. We do not recommend this as you may also damage the Buffalo due to phytotoxicity (over-application of chemicals).

Dicamba M Herbicide is registered to control Bindi-Eye weeds. Including a wetting agent with this herbicide is highly recommended to guarantee the best kill. A non-ionic surfactant such as Reactor Wetter 600 Surfactant or Wetter 1000 Surfactant is sufficient. Note with Bindi-Eye that when seed heads mature, they dry out and spread. If this has occurred, then you may see the emergence of new plants in the future, even after spraying out the existing weeds.

Using Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide to kill Oxalis is a good option on garden paths. The Dicamba M Herbicide is registered to control Oxalis weeds. If you don't require a selective herbicide, you could also use a knockdown herbicide such as Glyphosate (Roundup). Including a wetting agent with either of these herbicides is highly recommended to guarantee the best kill. A simple non-ionic surfactant such as Reactor Wetter 600 Surfactant or Wetter 1000 Surfactant is sufficient. Note with Oxalis that when seed pods mature, they dry out and explode, causing the seed to spread. If this has occurred, then you may see the emergence of new plants in the future even after spraying out the existing weeds.

We usually recommend selective herbicides such as 24D Amine 625 Herbicide, Fluroxypyr (i.e. Starane) Herbicides or MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide to control Blue Billygoat Weed.  Unfortunately, you don't have any of these on hand, but you might like to try your products as they are also selective broadleaf herbicides.  Although the use is 'off-label' and not guaranteed to provide results, you could use either Surefire Dicamba M Selective Herbicide or Surefire Buffalo, Bindi & Broadleaf Weedkiller with Bow Saw Metsulfuron included in the mix (i.e. 2 x herbicides combined).  For best results, please use a suitable wetting agent.  You may also choose to mix the chemicals at a stronger than usual rate due to the toughness of the Billygoat Weed to control.

Dicamba M Selective Herbicide does not have any claims of control over White Root (Lobelia).  Many gardening enthusiasts claim that Dicamba herbicides are the best to control White Root.  You do need to be careful using Dicamba M Selective Herbicide around roses.  Dicamba & MCPA target broadleaf species of plants which is what roses are.  Selective spraying around roses is fine.  However, be sure not to spray or allow spray drift onto the non-target plants.  If this does occur, quickly hose the affected plant with water as soon as possible.

To remove Paspalum & Kikuyu from Bermudagrass (Green Couch), we recommend DSMA Selective Herbicide.  This treatment may require repeat applications before removing the grasses you are targeting, as the initial sprays will only suppress them.  The Dicamba M should be setting the Buffalo Grass back as the Buffalo is susceptible to broadleaf herbicides such as 24D and Dicamba.

Answered by the admin When using a watering can to apply selective herbicides you are likely applying too much product per square metre for the grass to handle.  The Dicamba M is a selective herbicide and is safe to use in Kikuyu, however, you need to ensure that between 2.5-Litres & 4-Litres of the spray mix is evenly spread over 100 square metres (10m x 10m area).  If you went heavier than this rate then you are likely to see phytotoxicity where you will see a yellowing or browning effect making it look damaged or dead.  Phytotoxicity is damage to the plant from exposure to higher than tolerated levels of the chemical.  Dicamba M is a selective herbicide designed to take out broadleaf weeds without going after grasses when used & applied at the recommended rates.  The amount of damage done to the Kikuyu will depend on how much you overdosed it by.  Phytotoxicity is not uncommon and in the majority of cases, the grass will recover.  The most common application method of these herbicides is not by watering cans, but by pressure sprayers that can be purchased at your local hardware store.  The chemical is applied as a fine mist or spray to ensure that even coverage over the recommended area.

As Dichondra Repens is a broadleaf herb, we would be very reluctant to advise using Dicamba M Selective Herbicide on it.  Dicamba M is used to target broadleaf weeds selectively.  Unfortunately, we do not currently have or are aware of any selective herbicides that claim to be safe for use on Dichondra Rebens.  Some herbicides such as Surefire Buffalo, Bindi & Broadleaf Weedkiller are registered for use in some broadleaf varieties (i.e. Buffalo Turf); however, there is no mention of the effects or safety when used on Dichondra.  An 'off-label' trial could be undertaken if you consider using a product like this on a small discrete area.  Any chemical being off-label would be at your own risk.

Dicamba M Selective Herbicide is only selective on broadleaf plant species.  Blady Grass is not one of these species, and Dicamba M will not have any effect controlling it.  To the best of our knowledge, there are no selective herbicides that will target Blady Grass without taking out other grass species.  Glyphosate (Roundup) is the most commonly used herbicide to target Blady Grass.  In a pasture, the application needs to be done by spot spraying or when the Blady Grass is taller than the pasture where a Weedwiper can be used for selective control.

Dicamba M is a selective broadleaf weed herbicide, meaning it will only target broadleaf species of weeds without affecting certain host plants.  Paspalum, Crab Grass (Summer Grass) and Winter Grass are not broadleaf species and are not affected by Dicamba M.  You can either use a knockdown weedkiller such as Glyphosate (Roundup) on these weeds as a spot-spray however this will kill everything including the lawn sprayed, or there are selective herbicides that target certain grasses including Paspalum, Crab Grass (Summer Grass) and Winter Grass.   The type of lawn you have is also important as some selective turf products will kill or damage certain turf species.

With all the pesticides listed on our website, there is a 'Host/Pest' tab that outlines what host species the product can be used in and the weeds/pests registered to be controlled.  The product's directions for use (found in the 'SDS and Technical' Tab) also outlines all the instructions for using the products and the pests and plants that it can be used on.

Herbicides such as Dicamba M is more effective when applied to healthy weeds that are actively growing.  Dicamba M can be sprayed on Capeweed from Seedling through to adult plants providing the plants are actively growing.  Stressed capeweed plants that have already survived early-season dry spells will be harder to control.  Higher rates are recommended for adult plants (ie in flower).  Dicamba M does not sterilise or kill the seed, so spraying Capweed at the seedling stage is recommended.  Dicamba M Herbicide is a Group I herbicide.  Dicamba-M Herbicide contains members of the Benzoic acid and Phenoxy groups of herbicides.  Dicamba-M Herbicide has the disrupters of plant cell growth mode of action.

Dicamba M Herbicide will selectively remove Clover (and many other broadleaf weeds) from Kikuyu without killing your grass when used as directed.  Dicamba M is our most popular choice of herbicide for this purpose.

A mixing rate of 5-6mL per 1-Litre of water applied evenly over 10m2 is a common mixing rate.  It is also recommended to use a wetting agent such as wetter 1000 or wetter 600 to ensure the best week kill.  Do not use washing liquid or detergent.

When Dicamba M is applied by a garden sprayer or knapsack some yellowing of the turfgrass may be seen.  This is due to phytotoxicity.  Phytotoxicity is damage to the plant from exposure to too much chemical.  Dicamba M is a selective herbicide designed to take out broadleaf weeds without going after grasses when used at the recommended rates. What many people don't realise though is that when they are applied by spot spraying application the quantity of chemical being applied is often applied at a far more excessive amount than the recommended rates (usually applied as fine droplets or a light mist). With any selective herbicide, phytotoxicity can occur if the volume of the chemical is too high.

Many chemicals are recommended to be applied at 100L Water per hectare (usually by boom spraying), however, spot spraying units apply far higher amounts over a much smaller area, causing damage to the grasses.

Phytotoxicity is not uncommon and in the majority of cases, the grass will recover.

Tips For Use

When Spraying Dicamba M in Turf:

For best results:

  • Do not mow turf for at least 2 days before or after application.
  • Do not spray when rain seems likely to occur within 4 hours.
  • Do not spray when weeds are wet with dew or rain.
  • Do not spray if soil fertility is low or if the soil is waterlogged.
  • Do not spray weeds under stress (heat or waterlogging etc).
  • Only spray actively growing weeds.
  • Ensure thorough wetting of all weed foliage.
  • Do not fertilise turf for 2 weeks after spraying.
  • Do not allow grazing stock onto the sprayed area for 7 days after application.
  • Keep domestic animals off the treated area until the product has dried.

Mixing Directions:

  • Add the required amount of the product directly to the tank and mix well.

Application:

  • For Boom Application: Apply by a properly calibrated boom spray using not less than 50 litres of water per hectare unless indicated otherwise in Critical Comments column found in the directions for use.
  • For Aerial Application: Apply at least 25 litres total spray volume per hectare. The aircraft should fly as low as practical under the prevailing conditions to minimise drift.
  • For High Volume Application: Apply a minimum 1500 Litres per hectare. For Knapsack Application: A 15 Litre Knapsack treats 150 square metres.

Spray when the weeds are young and actively growing. A temporary wilting may be evident in crops after application. If seasonal conditions are unusually late or dry, seek further advice as damage result from spraying under these conditions. Growers should seek advice before spraying recently released cereal varieties. There is a nil tolerance of pea seed contaminates in  Cereal grain and less than 100% control of Volunteer Peas could result in dockage.

Restraints:

  • Do not spray when rain seems likely to occur within 4 hours.
  • Do not spray when weeds are wet with dew or rain or under stress from drought, low soil fertility, extreme cold or water logging.
  • Do not spray outside recommended crop growth as crop damage may result.
  • Do not apply to crops or grass pastures with clover, lucerne or medics.
  • Do not apply to legume pastures.
  • Do not apply to plants suffering from stress.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a dry, cool, well ventilated area away from children, animals, food, feedstuffs, herbicides, seed and fertilisers.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • Harmful if absorbed by skin contact, inhaled or swallowed.
  • Will irritate the eyes and skin.
  • Do not inhale vapour.
  • Repeated exposure may cause allergic disorders.
  • When opening the container and preparing the spray wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist, washable hat, elbow length PVC gloves, face shield or goggles.
  • When using the prepared spray wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist, washable hat and elbow length PVC  gloves.
  • If product in eyes, wash out immediately with water.
  • If product on skin, immediately wash area with soap and water.
  • After use and before eating, drinking or smoking, wash  hands, arms and face thoroughly with soap and water.
  • After each days use, wash gloves, face shield or goggles and contaminated clothing.

First Aid:

  • If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
